EV Charging Station

Definition

A point where you can connect an electric car to 240 volt power, which charges the car up to four times faster than the charging cable that comes with the car.

Things you need to know

The types of cars that can be charged at an electric vehicle charging station include plug-in electric vehicles such as cars and NEVs, and plug-in hybrids.

Also known as

Electric Vehicle Charging Station, EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment), Electric Recharging Point, Charging Point.

Cost Considerations

If you are going to hire an electrician to install the dedicated wiring and circuit, have them make it able to carry at least 50 amps. This will only cost a little bit more and can future-proof your charging station by making it able to work with cars that can charge faster than those available currently. Installation of an electric vehicle charging station costs $1,100 to $1,200, with about half that cost going to the charging station itself, and most of the rest toward installing the necessary 240V circuit.

Costs vary greatly by region (and even by zip code). To get free estimates from local contractors, please indicate yours.
