Different types of flagstone require different maintenance, so different types are common in different areas. For example, sandstone is cool in the summer, but can be damaged by too much water, so it is a great choice for the southwest.

Flagstone costs an average of $15 to $30 per sq. ft. Laying flagstone with the space between the stones filled with gravel can be as cheap as $10 per sq. ft., but it is not as durable or attractive as a path with the stones held together by mortar.
